Mary and Martha of Bethany, July 29th
Mary and
Martha were sisters who lived with their
brother Lazarus. All three were friends
of Jesus. Martha was very practical.
She liked to keep busy, to keep the house
clean and to show others she loved them
by taking care of them. To Martha, her
sister Mary seemed to have her head in
the clouds. When Jesus came to visit
them, Mary sat and listened to Jesus
while Martha worked, cooking and serving
a big meal. Martha was angry with Mary
and complained to Jesus that she did
nothing but sit and let Martha do all the
work. Jesus told Martha that she should
worry so much about little things. He
was pleased with Mary because she had
chosen to take care of the most important
thing of all, her spirit.
