Saint Margaret of Scotland, November 16th
The Pearl
of Scotland
Margaret
was born in Hungary in 1047. She was the
granddaughter of an English king.
In 1070 Margaret married the King of
Scotland. She did so many good things for
the people of Scotland that she was
called the "Pearl of Scotland." She had
more power than most queens because the
king loved her very much and would do
anything to make her happy.
Margaret always thought about the people
of Scotland first. Every morning
after she prayed she would feed orphaned
children with her own spoon. Then she and
the King would open the royal hall to
other poor people. There was a stone
called St. Margaret's Stone, where she
would sit so that anyone in trouble could
come to her for help.
Margaret had eight children, six sons and
two daughters. She brought them up to
love Christ. She died in 1093 when she
was only 46 years old. She is remembered
not only for helping the people of
Scotland, but as a truly good and kind
woman who cared about others more than
herself.
